Free@theIRS - and Elsewhere

In tough times, everyone loves a freebie. Here are five ways you can get free tax help:
- The Internal Revenue Service. You can download tax forms, instructions and publications from the IRS web site. In addition, if you meet the eligibility requirements, you can prepare and electronically file your return. Later, you can return to the site to find out when you’ll get your refund.
- Local Non-profit Organizations. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) or Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs provide free tax preparation and counseling services. These programs are sponsored by the IRS and can be found in cities across the country. There’s also a program for members of the military. Call 1-800-829-1040 to find a VITA or TCE site near you.
- National Non-profit Organizations. AARP, a non-profit with offices in all 50 states, offers on line tax counseling and answers to your questions via email. Check the AARP web site for details about the Tax-Aide program.
- Colleges and Universities. Are you a student? The accounting or business department of your school can help with tax preparation. Some schools have expanded programs you can use even if you’re not a student.
- State Accounting Boards. These organizations promote community service among members, and provide professional consultation and assistance to individuals and small businesses.
