The Message Your Bank is Sending You
by
HL Carpenter

Do you read "stuffers"? They're the brochures your bank sends you via snail mail, or posts online for you to check out when you're downloading statements or paying bills. Some stuffers promote bank products and services, but others offer educational tips and consumer alerts that could save you money or safeguard your account - items too important to ditch without a read-through.

Here are three informational inserts worth a glance before you consign them to the trash can.

Banking Online. How safe is the Internet when it comes to your banking information? These flyers tell you what your bank is doing to safeguard your accounts, provide information about the latest threats, and suggest ways to protect your computer.

Disaster Information. These pamphlets explain the measures your bank has in place in the event of a major disaster. They also detail steps you can take before a calamity strikes.

Frauds and Scams. Fake and/or counterfeit checks, debit card fraud, account hijacking, identity theft, phishing, skimming - it seems the world is overrun by crooks, all trying to steal your money. Bank brochures offer tips on how to recognize scams and protect yourself.
