CARPENTER COUNTRY
What's Happening in Our Neck of the Human Experience

It’s 2007 – and here in Carpenter Country the time has come for our newsletter to have a mini-facelift. The surgery will be done with a light hand, but will probably be ongoing.

For now the tips will be tightened up. The essays will be bobbed. The book review will be nipped off and tossed in the surgical dumpster.

The satire retains its sharp witty image and the articles will stay too, though we hope to make them more user friendly.

This means if there’s a topic you’d like us to research and write about, please send your idea to the e-mail address in this newsletter. We aren’t experts in every field, and our disclaimer still stands, but we’re willing to tackle most any subject.

So here’s our new look. Let us know what you think of the changes.

Dow History
by
HL Carpenter

Quick! What did the market do today?

As an investor, no doubt you don’t even ask which market when you hear that question. Instead, you probably quote the “Dow”, a popular stock index that tracks stock market fluctuations throughout the day.

TOP DRAWER TIPS
Topics and Tidbits

Tip: The Florida Intangible Personal Property Tax was repealed as of January 1, 2007. If you’re a resident of Florida, you no longer need to file a return or pay tax on your stocks, bonds and other intangible property.

Investment Glossary Term: Index. An index is a list that serves as a reference. For instance, the Dow Jones Industrial Average is a measure of the price movement of thirty stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The Dow is used as a proxy for the general trend or direction of the market as a whole.

Financial Horoscope: Forget the chakras, balance your portfolio instead. The dollar signs are aligned for a propitious January if you update your investment allocations. Romantically, you’ll fall in love with a stock that seems to have unlimited upside potential. You might even feel the two of you will never part. But keep in mind the road to true happiness includes an exit known as the five percent capital gains tax rate.

If 2006 was any indication, the complaint market should have a bright 2007. Polls confirm that complaining rose to history-making levels across the globe.
